The VI workshop “URBAN SPAs OF EXTREMADURA. CONSERVATION AND TOURISM” will take place on 18th May, organised by the General Directorate of Tourism and The General Directorate of the Environment of the Government of Extremadura, as part of the City of Cáceres Bird Festival (www.festivaldelasavescaceres.com).

This year’s presentation will be centred on the thirteen Points of Ornithological Interest (PIO) in Plasencia designed by the City Hall of Plasencia. From these sites more than 80 species of birds can be seen and buildings of great heritage value visited.

We will also be able to learn from the City Hall of Vitoria-Gastreiz, a city which amongst other things has been recognised as European Green Capital 2012, about the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gastreiz. This belt is the result of an ambitious plan for environmental restoration and recuperation, seeking to recover the ecological and social values of this space through the creation of a natural border around the city.

The University of Castilla-La Mancha will speak about the Protection and Impact on Birds of Measures of Heritage Conservation. We will see how work on buildings of heritage value may have diverse consequences on the species that use these places for nesting, meaning that measures must be adopted to ensure that they do not desert.

From the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN project, which was initially presented in the 2017 meeting, we will learn about the tracking of lesser kestrels, using GPS transmitters. Thanks to the information provided by these devices we will be able to understand the habitat use of the species both in the breeding areas as well as on the wintering grounds. Also, within the framework of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN we will see how measures to help lesser kestrels have been integrated into the work on buildings of high heritage and cultural value. A detailed protocol has been prepared to ensure that the work done on historic buildings where lesser kestrels nest can be achieved in a way compatible to this threatened raptor.

The workshop will take place in the morning in the Palace of the Golfines de Abajo in Cáceres and you can register by telephone: 927629404 and 670054819 from 09.00 to 20.00 or by email secretaria@orexco.net.
