ON APRIL 15 AND 16 AND JUNE 22, THE MARKING OF SEVEN LESSER KESTREL SPECIMENS WAS CARRIED OUT WITH SATELLITE TRANSMITTERS

Under Action A2 "Study and characterization of feeding habitats of the lesser kestrel in the urban SPAs and roosts of Extremadura", for which the partner Terra Naturalis is responsible, it was planned to place seven satellite transmitters on lesser kestrel specimens from several previously selected colonies -- selected due to their geographical location and their accessibility when doing the capturing.

MONITORING OF THE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NESTING SITE

Within the context of the follow-up activities for Action D1 of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN project, “Monitoring of the impact of the project's conservation actions on the lesser kestrel in the urban SPAs of Extremadura”, monitoring is being carried out to discover the effectiveness of the conservation actions undertaken within the project's scope. To this end, periodic visits are being made to the buildings where activities have been undertaken under Actions C1 and C2 to determine the degree of acceptance of the improvements made.

NEW LIFE ZEPAURBAN MATERIALS TO CREATE THEMED ESTABLISHMENTS

The General Directorate of Tourism, as a partner of the LIFE ZEPAURBAN Project in its commitment to strengthening the “URBAN BIRDING” Product, has provided all its members with various materials for the theming of their establishments.

"URBAN BIRDING" is an urban ornithological tourism product that is based on the development of activities that generate local economic wealth around the observation of the lesser kestrel in five Extremaduran towns: Cáceres, Jerez, Plasencia, Trujillo, and Zafra.

NEW RELEASE OF LESSER KESTREL CHICKS IN SAN VICENTE DE ALCÁNTARA

Tuesday, May 28 is the day scheduled for the first of three releases of lesser kestrel chicks to be carried out this year under the LIFE ZEPAURBAN Project, a project developed in Extremadura and coordinated by the General Directorate of the Environment of the Government of Extremadura, with DEMA as a beneficiary partner.

VII CONFERENCE: “URBAN SPAS OF EXTREMADURA. CONSERVATION AND TOURISM”

On the 17th, 18th, and 19 of May, the XI City of Cáceres Bird Festival will be held, organized by the General Directorate of Tourism and with the collaboration of the General Directorate of the Environment, Cáceres Provincial Council, and Cáceres City Council. SINCE LAST FEBRUARY, THE LESSER KESTRELS HAVE BEGUN TO RE-OCCUPY THEIR USUAL BREEDING COLONIES IN THE URBAN SPAS

The first lesser kestrels began to frequent the colonies during the first half of the last month of February, and during the following weeks some individuals that had been tagged with GPS transmitters during the 2018 breeding season under Action A2 of the LIFE ZEPAURBAN project could be observed.  The partner Terra Naturalis is responsible for aforementioned Action A2.

THE LIFE ZEPAURBAN PROJECT RECEIVES A VISIT FROM THE EXTERNAL TEAM

For yet another year, the LIFE ZEPAURBAN Project received a visit from the external team to supervise the work being undertaken. On the 19th and 20th of March, the third monitoring visit for the LIFE ZEPAURBAN Project took place under the direction of Sara Mora, the individual responsible for the Nemo-Idom team's monitoring of the project.

GUIDED TOURS TO LESSER KESTREL COLONIES AT THE URBAN SPAS OF EXTREMADURA

As part of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN Project, a series of activities have been started designed to disseminate the wealth of the birding community at the urban SPAs of Extremadura, with special attention being paid to the lesser kestrel, as well as to raise awareness among the local population about the need to protect the area as well as about its potential as a tourist resource. These actions revolve around talks and guided tours for schoolchildren, as well as other activities that are open to the rest of the population.

LESSER KESTREL CHICKS RELEASED IN 2018 IN THE THEN GREAT LESSER KESTREL COLONY LOCATED AT THE SAN VICENTE MÁRTIR PARISH CHURCH, IN THE SAN VICENTE DE ALCÁNTARA SPA, BEGIN TO RETURN

In mid-February, the first lesser kestrels began to arrive at the San Vicente de Alcántara SPA (Badajoz) after spending the winter in Africa. As part of Action C3 of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN Project, the reinforcement or recovery of a lesser kestrel colony at risk of disappearance was contemplated. The chosen colony was that of San Vicente de Alcántara, which had disappeared years ago. The recovery work for this colony began in 2018 with the construction of the release module in the church tower and the transfer of the first 50 chicks born in captivity at the DEMA Breeding Center.

DATA PROVIDED BY GPS TRANSMITTERS ALLOWS FOR THE PRECISE ESTABLISHMENT OF LESSER KESTREL FEEDING AREAS

One of the main factors when establishing the protection criteria for a species such as the lesser kestrel is to know, as accurately as possible, where their main feeding areas are and what environmental characteristics those areas possess.

Work starting on the awareness-raising campaign with the local population and schools in the Urban SPAs

ALGAKON, the company selected for the campaign, is starting work on awareness-raising and information dissemination to the local population and schools within action E7 of the LIFE-ZEPAURBAN project. In the framework of this action, external assistance was planned to be contracted to provide talks to primary and secondary schools, as well as to provide guided visits to urban centres, for both school students as well as the local population, to increase awareness about the lesser kestrel..

URBAN BIRDING in FITUR

The FITUR 2019 starts with the presence of our project LIFE-ZEPAURBAN in the official stand of Extremadura promoting the recently created product Urban Birding, whose objective is to promote tourism around birding in urban areas, especially the urban SPAs (Special Protection Areas for birds) in our region.
